Acne Treatment in Singapore

Acne is the most common skin condition in Singapore. Oily skin is a major factor causing acne. Pores can get blocked with dirt and bacteria, causing inflammation (pimples). It can be painful, especially when it’s severe. Although it’s not a life-threatening condition, acne can be extremely painful, particularly when it’s severe. It can also cause emotional distress.

Feeling alone and confused about how to treat your acne?

Don’t be scared. We are here to answer any questions you may have.

What are the symptoms of acne?

Acne can be found almost anywhere on your body — your shoulders, back, neck, chest, face, and even your hands. It most commonly develops on your face and back. When you have acne, you’ll typically notice pimples that are white or black. Both blackheads and whiteheads are known as comedones. While whiteheads and blackheads are the most common lesions seen in acne, other types can also occur, including Papules (small red bumps), Pustules (small red pimples), Nodules (solid bumps beneath the surface of your skin), Cysts (large lumps which can be painful).

What causes acne?

Acne occurs when the pores of your skin become blocked with oil, dead skin, or bacteria. One or more problems in this process can cause a pimple to develop. It commonly occurs when too much oil is produced by your follicles, dead skin cells accumulate in your pores, and/or when bacteria build up in your pores.

What are the risk factors for developing acne?

The myths about acne are quite common. It is believed that foods such as chocolate or French fries will contribute to acne. There is no scientific support for this. One of the risk factors is the hormonal changes caused by puberty or pregnancy, certain medications, such as certain birth control pills or corticosteroids, a diet high in refined sugar or carbohydrates, such as bread and chips, having parents that have acne. If you do notice a change in your skin during puberty, seek help from your dermatologist. During this time, you are at the highest risk of developing acne. Most of us can expect a decrease in acne as we get older.

How is acne diagnosed?

If you have symptoms of acne, talk to your therapist about getting a diagnosis. Your therapist will examine your skin and identify the types of lesions and their severity to determine the best treatment.

At-home care

  • There are a few self-care activities you can try at home to prevent pimples and clear up your acne. These include:
  • Cleaning your skin thoroughly – Twice daily Washing face with mild soap Using a mild exfoliator once weekly Closing pores with astringent.
  • Not squeezing your pimples, as this can spread bacteria to other parts of your face.
  • Not wearing hats or tight headbands that trap the heat on your scalp can cause sebaceous glands to produce more oil.

What is the outlook for someone with acne?

People that suffer from acne can also experience scarring, which can be difficult to get rid of and cause emotional distress. But, prompt treatment can help prevent scarring. A therapist will have treatment options designed to treat scarring.

How can acne be prevented?

The best ways to avoid acne after treatment are to maintain healthy skin and remove excess oil. Wash your face twice a day with an oil-free cleanser, use an over-the-counter acne cream to remove excess oil, avoid makeup that contains oil and that you remove thoroughly before bed, shower after exercising, avoid tight-fitting clothing, eat a healthy diet with minimal refined sugar, and reduce stress.
