Extraction has a bad reputation, and mostly it is deserved. Done in a hurry, on skin that has not been softened, it damages the follicle wall and spreads the problem sideways under the surface.
The preparation is the treatment
Ten to fifteen minutes of softening does most of the work: warm steam or a warm compress, an enzyme or gentle acid to loosen the plug, and time. If someone reaches for a loop within two minutes of you lying down, that is the thing to worry about — not the tool.
If it is fighting you, it is not ready. We stop and come back to it next visit.
What it should feel like
Pressure, not sharp pain. Around the nose and upper lip it is more intense simply because those areas are more sensitive. If you flinch consistently, your therapist should stop and change approach rather than push through.
Afterwards
Some redness for an hour or two is normal, and small pinpoint marks can last a day. What is not normal is bruising, broken capillaries, or spots appearing in places that were clear before.
Leave it alone for twenty-four hours: no makeup over the sites, no actives, no picking. Sunscreen the next morning matters more than usual, because fresh skin marks easily.
